Local Fruit and Vegetable Stands

Hampton Roads encourages consumers to purchase locally grown and produced foods and products. By eating locally, you’re saving small family farms, supporting the local economy, keeping our community healthy, and preserving the environment. Use this food guide to find the markets, farms, watermen and restaurants that offer the freshest, most delicious local and seasonal products.  www.buylocalhamptonroads.org

The power in buying locally comes from being able to ask your farmer questions that are important to you. We offer a few suggestions on things to ask or look for.

Questions to ask your farmer:
• Did you grow this product yourself or was it purchased from another farm?
• What are your growing methods?
• What are your animals fed? Are they free range and/or pasture raised?
• Do you have any recipes or recommendations for this product?
• How long ago was this product picked? Is it ready to eat? What’s the best way to store or preserve it?

Farms and Markets are often seasonal. Call or check websites for open dates.

Sandbridge Welcomes Your Fur Babies

Your Pet Deserves A Vacation Too!

Pets are welcome to vacation in Virginia Beach all year long!  Why leave your precious fur baby behind when heading to your family getaway? Your pet deserves a beach vacation too! Siebert Realty has over 65 fully furnished Sandbridge vacation rentals that warmly welcomes your pets.

A record 68% of American households now own a pet. Most, by far, are dogs and cats, who are now traveling more often with their human companions.  That’s why an increasing number of vacation rentals don’t just accept pets, they downright cater to them – usually for a fee that goes toward deep-cleaning.

The entire family is welcome to vacation in Virginia Beach and that includes Fido and Whiskers too! Whether it’s romping on our 35-miles of sandy beaches, taking a doggy-paddle in the ocean or playing a little game of fetch in our off-leash dog parks, you and your four-legged companion can experience “a dog’s life” at the beach!

Pets allowed on the Beach:
During the Winter, Spring and Fall months (before Memorial Day and after Labor Day weekend) dogs are invited to enjoy the public beaches and boardwalk area anytime (on leash). However, during the Summer months, (Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend) pets are limited to frolic on the north end of Virginia Beach above 42nd Street and the south end of Virginia Beach in the Sandbridge area before 10am and after 6pm (on leash). During the Summer season, dogs are also allowed on the boardwalk from 6am to 10am only.

Luckily, the question of where to find pet-friendly beaches is much easier. Coastal communities such as Sandbridge Beach realize it’s a “win-win” as long as the human half of the equation does their homework.  That means making sure their license and vaccinations are up to date, observing leash laws and, it should go without saying but we’ll say it anyway, scooping the poop. 🙂  If you and your 4-legged buddies are traveling to a beach away from home, it’s also a good idea to attach your vacation address and contact info to their collar.

Ready to plan a fun getaway with your fur babies?  Check out the over 65 Sandbridge vacation rentals that warmly welcome pets to the beach:  http://bit.ly/2hfAFT0Read More

Little Red Mailbox

Beyond the children’s playground, past Siebert Realty‘s big, blue beach chair and down the wooden plank walkway by the fishing pier in Sandbridge’s Little Island State Park is The Little Red Mailbox, where anyone can “Leave a Note of Hope.” Alongside the windswept dunes and ocean, The Little Red Mailbox has served as a way to reconcile losses with heartfelt messages for anyone to read. Inside the mailbox is a pen and journals, filled with inspirational entries or drawings to bring a smile to the face of anyone who could use a little uplifting.

The mailbox, painted red by Outer Banks artist Vicki Horning, was established on March 5, 2017 by Daniel’s Grace, a Virginia Beach-based nonprofit helping to support families stricken with cancer.  Jodi Newland, owner of Sweetwater Cuisine in Virginia Beach, founded the organization, Daniel’s Grace Foundation, after losing her husband Daniel to colon cancer at the age of 32.

The goal of The Little Red Mailbox of Hope is to spread hope, love, and expression through the journal that is inside.  The Founder, Sue Goodrich said, “It’s a place to share your thoughts, dreams, feelings or secrets or to just visit and read what others have left along their journey. Everybody needs a little hope, and helping others also helps ourselves.” Goodrich said the box was created as a refuge to escape daily hustle and bustle by finding peace by the sea.

The mailbox at Sandbridge is the fifth of its kind. Others are located in Buxton, N.C., Mechanicsville, Va. and Johnstown, Pa., with the first being founded in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. by resident Sue Goodrich.
