As we begin to kick off our summer season at Siebert Realty we are getting excited to have all our visitors come down to Sandbridge! To help you start planning some things to make your trip special we want to share some of our favorite things around the area! To start off this series we wanted to share some of our favorite places to dine outside!

Sage Kitchen at Andersons

Sage is opening up for the summer season with their outdoor patio in full swing! Located in Anderson’s right on Sandbridge Road it is our go-to for fresh farm to table goodness. Everything they serve is made from scratch and incorporates the freshest local ingredients, including herbs from their own greenhouse. Whether you’re a foodie or not you have to come check it out. They will also have a list of local musicians playing the night away! For more information check out Sage Kitchen here. 

The Baja 

One of our favorite places to unwind in the summer! Baja has been a Sandbridge staple for years and years! With a large outdoor seating area with incredible sunset views it’s a must for anyone visiting Sandbridge. Their menu focuses on the best seafood to delicious pizzas to the AMAZING appetizers (the she-fries are a must!). They also have so many fun things for families including live music, corn-hole, giant Jenga, and more! Also their coffee shop will be opening for the season on May 15th from 7am to 11am, so bring your towel and chairs and enjoy a cup of Joe and a breakfast wrap on the Bayview lawn!

Bandidos Taco Stand

Making their seasonal appearance once again, Bandidos taco truck is back! Located in the parking lot right before Siebert Realty is the tiny but mighty food truck that dishes out some of the best tacos, nachos, burritos, and quesadillas around. With a great menu that ranges from $1 to $9 it is a great option when feeding a crowd! They also have vegetarian options so everyone is happy! So grab your beach chairs or blankets because its time for a parking lot party at Bandidos!  

Sugar Shack

Sugar shack has been a beloved part of sandbridge for a long time! Located right below Simply Steamed, this little ice-cream shack has every flavor and all the toppings you could imagine. Unlike other ice cream shops here you pay what your ice cream weighs! They also have other options which include milkshakes and scoops in freshly made cones. This year Sugar Shack has added something new to their menu, breakfast! They are cooking up breakfast sandwiches, coffee, bagels, waffles, lattes and more! To make it even sweeter they offer FREE breakfast delivery! 

Sandbridge Island

Want a delicious meal without having to leave Sandbridge? Well this should be your go to, located near the entrance to sandbridge, Sandbridge Island is the perfect place to grab a pizza or fill up on some crab legs. Located right outside of the restaurant are a few tables with views of the Atlantic Ocean. They also have various local wines, beer, and desserts available.

Pick Local: Strawberries Edition

Where to pick? 

Two of the biggest farms in our area are the Flanagan Family Farm and the Brookdale Farm! Below you will be able to find a little more about each of them! 

Flanagan Farm is located ½ mile south of the Pungo stoplight in southern Virginia Beach, on what is commonly called Pungo Ridge. Pungo Ridge is home to some of the most prime soils for vegetable farming in Virginia Beach. The farm where Flanagan Farm is located is currently farmed by the fourth and fifth generations to consecutively produce crops on this farm. They have two acres of you-pick strawberries grown utilizing plasticulture to enhance the plant growth and keep the berries clean for harvest. Available late April through early June. They also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables starting in the Spring and going all the way through fall. 

Brookdale Farm grows the Chandler variety strawberries which are known for their great taste and forgiveness for not being picked totally ripe. They also grow the Camerosa variety which is known for it’s lasting berries and great taste if picked totally ripe. Lastly they also have Ruby Junes again this year, which are a great size and taste amazing.  Please note that weather can always affect varieties differently! On their website they also explain that they have made some changes to picking this year.  They are allowed to have picking within State guidelines.Keeping everyone healthy is the driving force behind their changes. They want to keep their fields open so compliance is necessary. For more information about how they are compiling with the ever-changing guidelines check out their website here.

Why pick?

Picking your own strawberries is great for so many reasons! The first is that it is an opportunity to get out of the house and get outside!  Just outside of Sandbridge there are many different farms which are offering a U-pick system and have place strict guidelines in order to accommodate for coronavirus concerns. Another great reason is by picking at our local farms, you will be helping support small business! Many of these farms also have delicious baked goods and fresh vegetables pre-picked and ready for pick up! The last reason we at Siebert Reality love picking our own strawberries is they taste so much sweeter after all your hard work! 

Bucket on buckets of strawberries… What to do now?

So now that you’ve done all of the hard work what now.. you could just eat them straight out of the bucket or you can start cooking! Below I’ve shared some of our staff’s favorite strawberry-based recipes! 

Try one of these delicious recipes!

Breakfast!

Classic Strawberry pancakes

Fancy up your classic Sunday morning pancakes with strawberries! This is a simple but delicious recipe, just make your favorite pancake batter. Following dice up some of your fresh strawberries and place them in a bowl. Pour your batter like normal and sprinkle a few diced berries on top before flipping! We like to finish them off with butter and powder sugar! 

Main dish! 

Substitute strawberries for tomatoes in the delicious Strawberry Caprese

Toast some sourdough bread lightly. While the bread is toasting, slice some fresh mozzarella and strawberries and place to the side. On one piece of sourdough spread some pest. Then top with strawberries and a couple piece of mozzarella. To finish it drizzle a balsamic glaze and top with your other piece of sourdough! And enjoy!this dish was inspired by one of Virginia Beach’s local coffee shops: Sawdust! 

Side dish!

Strawberry Salsa is the perfect summer dish to serve with chips or a fun way to top fresh tacos! For this recipe you will need:

  • 2 cups strawberries slice and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup red onion diced small
  • 2 Tbsp jalapeno pepper seeded and diced small
  • 1 Tbsp cilantro chopped
  • 1 tsp lime zest
  • 2 Tbsp lime juice
  • 2 Tbsp white balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Blend it all together & refrigerate until ready to serve. 

Dessert! 

Fresh strawberry bundt cake served with vanilla ice cream…might be heaven. We don’t need to talk this one up, here’s the recipe!

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice divided
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla
  • 12 ounces fresh strawberries diced
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan (10-15 cup pan). In a large bowl, sift together 2 1/4 cups of flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix in the lemon zest and set aside.
    2. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 3-5 minutes. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Alternate beating in the flour mixture and the yogurt, mixing just until incorporated.
    3. Toss the strawberries with the remaining 1/4 cup of flour. Gently mix them into the batter. Pour the batter into the Bundt pan. Place in the oven and reduce the temperature to 325 degrees F. Bake for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
    4. Allow to cool at least 20 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. Once cooled whisk together the remaining 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and the powdered sugar. Drizzle over the top of the cake.

Drinks! 

Strawberry mojitos the perfect way to cool off after a long summer day! For two servings you will
need: 

  • 1 cup of sliced strawberries 
  • 12 fresh mint leaves 
  • 1/8 cup of simple syrup 
  • Juice from 1/2 of a lime 
  • 4 ounces of light rum
  • Club soda
  • strawberries, lime wedges and/or mint sprig to garnish 

Instructions: 

    1. In a cocktail shaker, muddle strawberries, mint leaves, simple syrup and lime juice with a muddler (use the back of a wooden spoon if you don’t have a muddler).
    2. Pour in two glasses over ice (equal amounts). Add 2 ounces of rum to each glass and top with club soda. Garnish with a strawberry, lime wedge and/or mint sprig if desired.

Couldn’t make it down to the beach this summer due to busy schedules?

Let me tell you a little secret, summer isn’t the only time to have a beach vacation. Planning a trip to Sandbridge in the Fall might sound a little strange, but here are 5 reasons it’s better than the summer stay you missed out on! 

No Crowds! 

Imagine waking up & sipping on a cup of coffee on the deck of your oceanfront rental as the sun rises. You look north then south, only to see stretches and stretches of uncrowded shoreline. Now, look straight out to the ocean to see dolphins playing in the ocean..yes you deserve this. On your fall vacation, you could comb the beach for hours looking for the perfect shells, as the warm water wash up at your feet, completely unbothered. This is what Autumn in Sandbridge is all about.

Perfect Weather! 

Do you ever dread a trip to the beach? What about trying to carry the 4 chairs, the 3 boogie boards, the umbrella, 9 different bottles of sunscreen, & trying not to burn your feet on the scorching sand while you try to find an open spot on the beach…yeah, this doesn’t sound too ideal to us either. Do you know what does sound perfect? Spending the entire day at the beach in the sunny & 75 weather as the cool ocean breeze drifts through. It doesn’t stop there either! When the sun goes down its time to grab your blankets & gather by a fire pit with your favorite people. The only thing you have to worry about is who’s bringing the marshmallows! 

Fall Sunrises & Sunsets

Autumn brings Sandbridge some of the best sunrises & sunsets. In the morning on the east, it looks as if an artist has used pastel watercolors to paint the sky, it is one of the most calming sights to see as you start your morning. As the day comes to an end part two of nature’s art show begins. This time instead of calming pastels, the sky becomes fiery with oranges, yellows, and pinks. Making it the perfect backdrop to enjoy a glass (or two) of wine on the west deck of your vacation home!

Sandbridge’s 40th Annual Pig Pickin’

|September 7th, 2019|

Come out and join the Sandbridge locals for a fun day at Little Island Park (Southend of Sandbridge Beach). The annual Pig Picking features All-You-Can-Eat food and drinks, as well as live bands and even local art and crafts on sale. Siebert Realty will also have a table set up under the tents. We have some fun FREE GIVEAWAYS, so be sure to stop by and say “Hello”!

 Wasserhund Oktoberfest 2019

|September 21st, 2019|

 Locally, Wasserhund Brewery and the Nobleman are presenting the 4th Annual Oktoberfest Event for all of Coastal Virginia and beyond on September 21st from noon till 5 pm at Hunt Club Farm in Virginia Beach. This event will serve as the quintessential Oktoberfest for our area featuring over 30 breweries, traditional German food and fare, festival atmosphere, and so much more.

Within Sandbridge and just beyond the bridge are some amazing spots to get your workout in. Here you can find accommodations for everyone from runners to bikers to water-lovers!

Biking

For those looking for a Breezy Ride: ☼☼☼☼

Bikes are the perfect transportation for getting from point A to B in Sandbridge! Whether you are looking for a quick way to get to the beach or down to little island park, bikes are the best way to feel the summer breeze and check out all the views. If you’re an early riser and are looking for a sweet treat, you definitely have to bike to Baja Coffee in the morning for a muffin and smoothie! 

For the Adventure Seeker:☼☼☼☼

Unique to Sandbridge is the beautiful Back Bay wildlife refuge! While you can get to the Visitor’s Center by car, if you want to adventure deeper into the park you either have to walk or bike, but biking is the most recommended because it allows you to go further into the 3,884-acre False Cape State Park. Due to its restricted access, this is one of VA’s hardest parks to access, which also makes it one of the rarest visited. Throughout the park are many trails to follow, using a map from the visitor’s center, you can choose the route that best suits you! 

For Class Lovers:☼☼☼☼

If you prefer to get your biking done stationary, don’t worry just a short drive outside of Sandbridge is the perfect cycling class for you! Cycle Bar offers many different variations of rides for customers, ranging from high-intensity full body class to low-intensity chill workouts. If you check out their website and choose the location “Red Mill Commons”, you can find their schedule and book a ride during your Sandbridge Vacation. 

Running

For the Newbie or Longtime Runner:☼☼☼☼

Stretching only 4.5 miles from North to South, Sandbridge is the perfect place for first-time runners or long distance lovers. Based on your preferences you can choose to run on the beach, semi-beach Sandfiddler road, or on the main road Sandpiper. The best time to run is early in the morning between 6am-9am before it gets too hot. One safety tip is that when running on the roads of Sandbridge, run within the bike lanes in the direction of oncoming traffic so you can see drivers coming.

For the Trail Runner:☼☼

If you prefer to get off the road during your runs, Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is the place for you. With two trails to choose from April to October, it is the perfect place to run with nature. The distance from the visitor center to False Cape is 4 miles (8 miles round trip). If you’re really up for a haul, the trail goes for 9 miles from the visitor center to the North Carolina State Line.

Kayaking 

For the Laid-Back (Bay) Paddle:☼☼☼☼

 If you’re looking for the perfect laid-back paddle, evenings on the bay are perfect for you. With calming breezes and gorgeous colorful sunsets, it is the perfect thing to do when the sun starts to set. During the day time, you can also bring your poles out to get a little fishing in on your vacation.

For the Sea Seekers:☼☼☼☼

Kayaking is an awesome workout! You can up your workout game by bringing your kayak to the beach! The oceanfront is the perfect place to paddle out and feel the salty ocean breeze. If you get lucky, you might also have the opportunity to see pods of dolphins playing in the waves, turtles coasting along, and pelican and osprey dive to grab dinner. Ocean kayaking is perfect for the whole family.

 Surfing & Paddle Boarding is the perfect excuse to get out of the office and down to the beach! The intensity of this workout varies day to day and is dependent on your experience level and ocean conditions. The Sandbridge Seaside Market is a must stop on all visitors checklists. Not only does it have anything and everything a family would need on their trip, but it also has the world’s best donuts (okay we might be a little biased!). Made fresh every morning with a variety of flavors, they are a crowd favorite. Make sure to grab a box or two early, because they sell out fast!

The Baja is the local’s retreat. It is a place to come for delicious food, live music, and beautiful sunsets. Whether you’re are looking for the perfect place for a family dinner or to relax and grab drinks, the Baja is the place for you. Also, if you’re in need of the tasty wake-up call, head over with the sunrise and grab a cup of joe and breakfast burrito at Baja Coffee.

Bandidos is a little food truck tucked on Sandbridge road. This hidden gem is serving up delicious made to order tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and more. With great prices and outdoor seating, this is the best place to grabs a quick bite after a long beach day. There might be a little wait since it is extremely popular, but it is 100% worth the wait! Also, make sure to add churros to your next order!

 

Away from the hustle and bustle of the resort area

Located a short 30-minute drive south, Sandbridge is secluded from the bright light and craziness of the resort area. Follow down the scenic Sandbridge road and find our hidden slice of paradise. Sandbridge is special in that there are no hotels — there are only houses and condos available to rent.

This helps to keep beach traffic low and the atmosphere laid-back, which makes it the best place for families to play all day and night at the beach. From waking up early and combing the beach in the morning to using flashlights for catching sand crabs at night, Sandbridge Beach allows for all day fun. Also, don’t forget to grab some surfboards and kayaks from Moneysworth Rentals to make your beach day even more fun!

Get in touch with Nature

One unique feature about Sandbridge is that it is home to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This Refuge includes over eight miles of scenic trails, many camping areas, various wildlife, and a visitor’s center. All of which makes this the perfect place for photographers, adventures, and families to visit.

There are also many other opportunities to get your explorer on! The Blue Goose Tram runs throughout the year, offering a guided tour through the refuge and False Cape State Park to the historic Wash Woods site. Volunteer days, such as Clean the Bay Day (June) and National Public Lands Day (September) give visitors the opportunity to protect and maintain their national wildlife refuge. Fishing clinics are also offered at these volunteer events.

Just added this summer is the opportunity for kids to become Junior Rangers! Children ages 5 and up can pick up a Junior Refuge Ranger booklet filled with 19 fun activities all about nature here at Back Bay NWR. As you work through the book you can earn the title & badge of Junior Refuge Biologist, and if you complete the whole thing you become a Junior Refuge Manager!!

Beach walks in the morning are the best time to watch the sunrise, comb the beach for shells, and watch your pup play in the waves. Sandbridge beach stretches 4.5 miles from north to south end, so the hardest decision you have to make in the morning is whether to go left or right! 

Before you go here are a few rules that the beach has about dogs:  

  • During season which is defined as the time period from 6:00 p.m. on the Friday before Memorial day through 6:00 p.m. Labor Day of each year, pets are not allowed on any other public sand beaches except before 10:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. If you are staying on the bayside your pups can swim all day long in Back Bay!
  • All dogs must be on a leash while walking on the beaches or the streets of Sandbridge.  For the safety of all visitors on the beach, canine and human alike, please supervise your pet carefully.
  • Make sure to bring your bags! It is important to clean up after your dogs so that all visitors can enjoy the beach as much as you and your pup. There are trash cans located at all beach entrances, so you can dispose of your trash and continue on your way!
