Breaking Ground in Sandbridge

Initially called Sand Ridge, likely attributing the topography of the area, the name Sandbridge was cemented after local settlers believed the name fit a sandy bridge that lead to the beach. It was the late 1870’s when the buzz of the area caught on. The United States Lifesaving Service was authorized by the U.S. Congress to construct stations along the coastline to aid seamen. While this populated the area with stationed surfmen and keepers, along with hunters, fishermen, and other activity-driven folks, the growth of Sandbridge development started in the 1950’s.

In 1952, Harvey Lindsay, a Norfolk, VA real estate developer bought a large section of Sandbridge to create a second home community; and following that, James Kabler built the first Sandbridge house in 1953. From there, the area and residents started to expand and grow until a massive northeaster storm in the early 60’s attempted a clean slate for the area. Winds and tides devastated the area, but residents cleaned it up, and had a new vision of constructing homes on pilings for stability.

Sandbridge continued to flourish and blossom into a thriving year round community in the 1980s. Today, Sandbridge epitomizes the “beach community”. It proudly provides a special beach home setting for locals along with an ideal vacation spot for guests – where they can still embrace the gorgeous beach without tourist saturation. Sandbridge gives each person the unique opportunity to visit renowned parks (Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park) along with expansive beach access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Come make memories in Sandbridge. We guarantee they will be unforgettable!

You can fish off the Little Island Pier, charter an off shore boating excursion, cast off of the beach, and much more. Please make sure to acquire the correct Virginia Beach fishing permit based on where you want to fish – it’s saltwater oceanside, and freshwater bayside.

Depending on the season, you can boost the heart rate with seeing nature in action, whether it be a dolphin tour or whale watching tour. Consider a fun sightseeing perspective with a horseback riding beach tour.

May in Virginia Beach

There’s a lot to say about May in Virginia Beach. It’s common for most to think the optimal beach vacation time is in the latter summer months; that thinking doesn’t hold true here. Virginia Beach offers visitors amazing vacations any month, but there’s something extra special about May. Beautifully situated between Spring and Summer, May is a treasured month for beach vacations.

The first May perk, and probably one of the most popular features, is the unlimited access to the beach for Fido. Sandbridge is a pet friendly beach area. During the month of May, you can not only take advantage of the gorgeous weather, you can bring the whole family to the beach at any time. Come June and into the summer months, Fido will need resume the honorable guard dog duties protecting the rental from 10am-6pm. Pet beach play is permitted before and after that time frame during those months.

May also offers the ideal getaway setting. Guests can decide if they want to take a long, needed vacation or come visit for a short getaway. The month lends the opportunity of combining an extended beach weekend away with weather that is transitioning to summertime. This combo means vacationers can anticipate some wonderful days outside. Not to mention the pools open in early May, so guest can enjoy all the rental amenities!

May also launches an unofficial festival and events season in the area! There are two different wine festivals, a monster trucks show, an air show, the renowned Pungo Strawberry Festival, and so much more! Visitors can fill their vacation with memorable days at the beach and fun events in Virginia Beach.

To be honest, any time is the perfect time to visit Sandbridge Beach, but May boasts a slight competitive edge compared to other months. It offers expansive beaches, right in the launch of sandal season. Activities, events, amenities and even discounted rental rates mean guests get a memorable vacation for a bargain price.

May is here, and we look forward to seeing you! Book today at Siebert Realty.

Packing for the Perfect Beach Day

Your perfect Sandbridge Beach day is right around the corner! You have your favorite beach chair and towel ready. Books, toys, and music are packed along with some sunscreen. The anticipation of relaxing on the beach, dips in the water, and strolls in the sand are building. Before you leave, consider these extra tips, tricks and insight that help make your beach day even more perfect:

  1. Frozen snacks, like grapes, can double as ice to help keep things cold in your cooler, as can half-frozen water bottles.
  2. Pre-making sandwiches and then putting them back in the bread bag help keep the food dry and have snacks ready.
  3. Anchor your beach umbrella to make sure a breeze doesn’t blow your shade away.
  4. Turn flip flops sole facing up so the sun won’t heat them before you put them back on (or hang them from an umbrella).
  5. Pack a t-shirt and hat for skin breaks from the hottest part of the day.
  6. Remember that sun reflects off of water so wear UV protection sunglasses.
  7. Apply sunscreen at your vacation rental home prior to hitting the beach. This way sand or other variables won’t distract from full coverage. Then bring the sunscreen to the beach and reapply throughout the day.
  8. Bring a trash bag. There are public trash cans, but being able to consolidate then do one trash drop makes for a more convenient trip.
  9. Bring a bucket. This can be a central location for items to remove from pockets prior to swimming in the ocean, a place to hold seashells, or even double as a speaker if needed.
  10. Make your spot a personal landmark and check it when in the water. Ocean currents can nonchalantly move you down the beach.

No matter what you bring to the beach, you’re guaranteed to leave it with the best of memories. Come explore Sandbridge and make a new family tradition! Browse and book your rental today!
